Recently several changes have been implemented in the Canadian student visa requirements. One of the significant updates revolves around the Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL). Effective from 22nd January 2024, most students now need to furnish a PAL from the province or territory where they intend to study. Certain levels of studies like master’s and PhD amongst others are exempted from this requirement.

Two Ways to Apply for a Canadian Student Visa

  • Study Permit Application: This traditional route involves submitting your application through the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.

  • Student Direct Stream Application: This streamlined process is available to applicants from selected countries. It offers faster student visa processing for eligible applicants.

An Overview of Obtaining a PAL for Student Visa Application

The introduction of the Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) underscores the Canadian government's commitment to ensuring that every international student gets adequate facilities during their stay in the country. As a result, after getting the letter of acceptance and paying the tuition fee deposit which can vary as per the designated learning institution (DLI), international students are eligible to obtain the PAL.

Application for PAL is completed by the student’s University or Institution, post that he/she will receive the PAL by email. Once this step is complete, international students are all set to apply for their student visas to study in Canada.

Student Direct Stream: A Synopsis of the Fast-track Process

The Student Direct Stream Canada popularly known as SDS is a faster student visa application process for applicants belonging to selected countries. To qualify for this stream, applicants must meet specific criteria, like.

  • Residing in a specified country
  • Exhibiting financial stability by paying the tuition for the first year of study and having a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC).

International students who come from these selected countries are encouraged to apply through the SDS category. However, if they are studying at the top-ranked Universities or Institutions in Canada, then they can apply through the general visa application process as well.

Student Visa Processing Timeline
