As of now, over 3,400 Higher Education Institutions in the USA accept IELTS scores as proof of English proficiency for non-native speakers. In the recent years, IELTS has become a favoured option among international students as it is more approachable in terms of format, flexibility in test dates, and globally available test centres. 

While TOEFL has long been the default U.S. preference, especially for Institutions with high prestige, more Universities that historically insisted on TOEFL scores have started to accept IELTS scores as well. Many now view IELTS and TOEFL as equivalent, provided the score thresholds are met. In certain regions or for certain student profiles, IELTS may even be more convenient.
