Scholarships for International Students in New Zealand

In this article we will be mentioning the scholarship options available to international students pursuing education in New Zealand by the government or the university you have selected.

 

Government Scholarships:

  • New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships

This is a merit-based scholarship which covers the full tuition fee and allowance. This scholarship is applicable to international students applying for the master’s program in any of the 8 universities of New Zealand. 

  • New Zealand Excellence Awards

This is also a merit-based scholarship which costs up to NZD 10,000 towards the first year of tuition fee. It is applicable to all 8 universities of New Zealand. 

  • Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia and Latin America 

This scholarship is being offered since 2013 by the New Zealand government and administered by Education New Zealand Manapou Ki Te Ao (ENZ). 

It is a flexible scholarship which supports long-term or short-term program including study abroad, internship, postgraduate study, and language programs. 

This scholarship has enabled over 2400 students from Asia and Latin America to explore life changing experiences in New Zealand.

 

University Specific Scholarships:

 

University of Canterbury 

  • UC International First Year Scholarship

Any student who is admitted to the University of Canterbury in any of their undergraduate program can apply for this scholarship. It is a merit-based scholarship which provides NZD $15,000 for 1 year tuition fees.

  • UC College of Engineering International Scholarship

This scholarship is for the students in full-time BE(Hons) Degree at UC given that the recipient is a full-fee-paying international student.

  • UC Masters Scholarship

Any masters student at this university can apply for this scholarship. The amount of scholarship for international students in New Zealand is as per the qualifying project only, and the scholarship is merit based.

Full-time and part-time students pursuing a research master’s degree at the university can apply for the scholarship if they are working on a project that includes a single thesis, dissertation, research project, creative production, or performance with a credit weighting of 90-120 points. 

 

Lincoln University

  • Lincoln University’s Undergraduate Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship

This is a merit-based scholarship offering NZD 5,000. To be applicable for this scholarship the student must have a GPA of at least 75% or B+ in the final year of their bachelor’s degree. 

  • Lincoln University’s International Undergraduate Scholarship –

This too is a merit-based scholarship and is applicable only to the students who have a GPA of 75% and above or B+ grade in their final year of bachelor’s degree.

  • Tongarewa Scholarship

The scholarship amount for this merit-based scholarship can range anywhere between NZD 5,000 to NZD 10,000 and is applicable for international students who are paying full tuition fees for the first year of undergraduate program or are entering a post graduate program. 

 

Victoria University of Wellington

  • Faculty of Law International Students LLM Fee Scholarship

This scholarship is for the students pursuing LLM degree and could be for one year to full time degree. The scholarship amount for this degree is NZD 5000.

  • Massey University Creative Art International Excellence Scholarship

This university offers scholarships for many of their creative arts programs which are: Bachelor of Design, Fine Arts, Māori Visual Arts, Creative Media Production, and Commercial Music. Each Scholarship is valued at NZD 15,000 for a 3-year degree or NZD 20,000 for a 4-year degree. 

 

University of Waikato

  • University of Waikato International Excellence Scholarship

Students enrolling at the University of Waikato for the first time in either the undergraduate or postgraduate degree. Can apply for the merit-based scholarship of NZD 10,000.

  • University of Waikato Foundation Studies Scholarships

This scholarship is applicable for those students who are enrolling for the first time into the Certificate of Attainment in Foundation Studies or the Certificate of University Preparation (CUP) at the University of Waikato.

 

John Wright Scholarships

  • John Wright Academic Scholarship

Average requirement for this scholarship is of minimum 70% in 4 academic subjects (not including local language) in their 12th. The scholarship amount is calculated as 10% of the student’s first year tuition fee. 

  • John Wright Sports Scholarship

This scholarship is applicable to the students who exhibit sporting excellence. It covers the recipients full first year tuition fee, the partial scholarship will be an amount equivalent to 20 per cent of a student’s first year tuition fee. 

 

Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology- Bachelor’s Degree Scholarship

This scholarship is applicable to you if you are entering this university for the first time. Every student from the bachelor’s degree can apply for these scholarships which provide the amount of NZD 3000.
