Germany has one of the most outstanding academic systems, which makes it a sought-after destination for students who wish to study abroad. In addition to exceptional research possibilities, availability of a wide range of courses and globally renowned programmes, Germany is home to several top-tier universities, making it a preferred choice for most international students.

However, before taking a decision, students should perform detailed research in order to gather all the relevant details. So, if you're an international student searching for information about higher education in Germany, then keep reading to learn everything you need to know about the German education system.

Why do students prefer studying in Germany?

Germany is a preferred choice for international students owing to its prestigious universities, rich history, a plethora of professional opportunities and excellent living conditions. One of the most important reasons why students prefer education in Germany is the fact that German degrees are highly regarded by recruiters everywhere. Throughout the country, there are roughly 400 institutes of higher education that provide more than 19,000 different study options. This enables students to choose from a wide range of career options, including graduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses in engineering, robotics, management, medicine, humanities, art and design.

According to the Times Higher Education and QS rankings, Germany is home to 43 universities that are top-rated and regarded to be amongst the best in the world. Since Germany is a Schengen member, students hailing from a German college or university have unrestricted access to other Schengen countries while studying there. Also, the fact that public colleges in Germany are free to attend is amongst the most convincing reasons for students to select it as the country to pursue higher education.

All about the German education system

In Germany, many universities are famous for offering study programmes in almost every field. The country also offers various degrees suited to students' interests. The world's first research institution, Heidelberg University, not just rests here but is also popular for its research-focused curriculum. Also, several conventional courses have been made available for students pursuing higher education in Germany.

Additionally, learning German is highly recommended for students who want to study in Germany. And, this is because most universities here prefer to have German as the medium of communication. However, a few colleges also provide bilingual master's degree programmes with subjects taught in German and English, but the number is very few.

Studying in Germany: Visas and permits

You can live and study in Germany without a visa if you are a citizen of an EU/EEA country, Switzerland, or another country in the Schengen Area. For other students, it is mandatory to register with the local Bürgeramt or Einwohnermeldeamt if your visit will last longer than three months. Additionally, you may travel to Germany without a visa if you are a citizen of Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea or the United States. However, you must register at the local Ausländeramt to obtain a German residence permit once you have arrived. Also, the only countries requiring student visas are Andorra, Brazil, El Salvador, Honduras, Monaco and San Marino.

The German embassy in the applicant's country handles all other visa arrangements. So, all applicants must be able to produce all the necessary documents to enrol in the class. They must also be able to demonstrate that they are proficient in the German language. Having said that, this process can be a tiresome one, but with the right guidance, it can be a breeze. The cost of education in Germany

After September 2014, the German government declared that there would be no tuition fees charged for state undergraduate students, which is a huge bonus for most students. However, private universities have still continued to charge tuition fees, which can cost at least €8,000 for undergraduate students. For students who have completed their bachelor's degree at a German institution within the last two years, master's degrees are typically free in the public universities. Otherwise, they can cost up to €8,000-€10,000 per semester. However, most PhD programmes are free for all students.

Additionally, in order to provide economic assistance, grants and loans are occasionally available to students from outside Germany and the European Union through the Federal Student Financial Assistance Programme (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz, or BAföG). At the beginning of every semester, students are required to pay their semester fees, covering the costs of the student union, student government and occasionally, local transportation tickets. While it may vary between several universities, the average tuition fee may range between €100 and €250.

Language requirements for taking admission to German universities

Although knowing the local language, i.e. German in this case, will be helpful for you, but there are no prerequisites that without that knowledge you will not get admission. So, whether you are fluent in German or have no knowledge of the language, you can apply to German universities and colleges and secure admission.

Accommodation for students studying in Germany

German universities do not arrange student housing, so it is your responsibility to find suitable accommodation for yourself. In Germany, students can easily find affordable and comfortable accommodation units for around €240 per month. So, it is advisable that as soon as the university sends you a confirmation letter for admission, you must start looking for accommodations online.
