According to recently disclosed numbers from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), 2022 was a banner year for academic institutions in Canada. According to IRCC data, there were 807,750 international students in possession of valid study permits (study visas) for Canada as of 31 December 2022. This is an astounding 31% surge from the previous year when there were only slightly over 617,000 international students.
IRCC also reports that "Canada is on course to set a new record this year" in terms of how quickly it issues study permits. Over 670,000 study permits had been processed by IRCC as of [30 November 2022], up from over 500,000 in the corresponding period in 2021. The numbers speak for themselves.

However, as it stands processing timeframes continue to be a major concern, with reports indicating that new applications lodged from outside of Canada might take up to 10 weeks to process but you should note that the turnaround time is 4-5 weeks only.
Even though processing timelines will vary by country, IRCC's reporting in this area is based on a standard of service of 60 days, which continues to indicate that students should file study permit applications well in advance of their intended course starts.
