Canada has been one of the most sought-after study destinations for international students. This leading study destination is a popular choice for students due to many reasons, some of which include the presence of high-quality educational institutions, scholarship prospects, post-study work opportunities, a warm and inclusive society, etc.

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Minister Marc Miller has publicised the country’s plan to implement new measures to strengthen Canada’s international student program and keep a check on the fraudulent practices concerning international students. Be it fake university acceptance letters or student visa fraud, numerous international students including Indian students have become the victims of such fraudulent practices of late.

To safeguard genuine students from these frauds and overcome these challenges, the government of Canada has announced modifications and enhancements to the International Student Program. So, let’s dive into this news and get you updated with all the latest enhancements related to study in Canada

The Latest Measures Announced

Student’s Letter of Acceptance will be Confirmed by IRCC

As per the latest changes, the post-secondary designated learning institutions (DLI) will have to confirm every applicant’s letter of acceptance with IRCC directly. This new verification process will be effective from the 1st of December 2023. The intent behind this enhanced verification process is to provide additional protection to international students from letter‑of‑acceptance fraud. This will not only help in avoiding fraud but also ensure that study permits will be issued based on genuine letters of acceptance.

Implementation of a Recognized Institution Framework

IRCC will be implementing a ‘recognized institution’ framework by the fall 2024 semester. This framework will benefit the post-secondary DLIs by providing them with the option of priority processing of study permits for their prospective students and applicants.

Assessment of Post-Graduation Work Permit

IRCC will conduct a comprehensive assessment pertaining to the criteria for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program. This assessment will commence shortly in the forthcoming months and new reforms will be introduced in order to meet the demands of the Canadian labour market. It will also meet the needs of the country’s regional and Francophone immigration goals.

Addressing the challenges of international students, these are the latest measures and enhancements announced by IRCC that will be effective soon. Through these measures and changes in the International Student Program, genuine students will be safeguarded from any further deceptions.

Demonstrating strong support for international students, Canada is undoubtedly one of the leading study abroad destinations. Canada’s latest amendments to the International Student Program will continue to strengthen its position as a preferred global education hub.
