Canada continues to solidify its position as a top study destination by introducing new rules to protect international students and enhance the integrity of its education system. On November 15, 2024, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, Honourable Marc Miller announced certain further key changes with immediate effect.
As per the new regulations, eligible international students can now work part-time up to 24 hours per week during academic sessions. This has been increased from the previous 20-hour cap. Furthermore, international students can continue to work full-time during semester breaks like summer vacation or winter holidays.
This significant change not only provides students with more flexibility to manage their cost of education in Canada but also aligns with the Country's evolving labour market needs.
Another important development is that international students will now need to apply for a new study permit again if they want to change the learning institution. Also, getting approval for a new study permit is mandatory before switching the learning institutions.
By mandating approval before transfers, IRCC is taking steps to protect students from fraudulent institutions and providing them with a secure and transparent process.
To prevent misuse of study permits, Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) are now required to submit two reports to IRCC every year. These bi-annual reports will confirm that the study permit holders are actively enrolled and attending their classes.
If international students are found to be non-compliant with their enrolment conditions, then they may face investigations and enforcement actions. It could result in the cancellation of their Canada student visa. This measure ensures that resources are allocated to genuine students only.
