In a momentous step towards enhancing bilateral relations, the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu arrived in New Zealand on August 8, 2024. It’s significant to note that an Indian President visited New Zealand after eight years.

Upon her arrival in Wellington, President Murmu was warmly received by Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro at the historic Government House. The President was honoured with a traditional Maori "Pōwhiri" ceremony, a gesture that highlighted the deep respect and admiration New Zealand holds for its ties with India. A Royal Guard of Honour was also accorded, further symbolizing the importance of this visit.

Strengthening Ties between India & New Zealand

During their meeting, President Murmu and Governor-General Kiro reflected on the enduring friendship between India and New Zealand. Both leaders underscored the potential to enhance the economic relationship between the two countries through mutually beneficial collaborations, particularly in sectors such as technology, agriculture, and education. They also discussed expanding cooperation in trade, investment, and people-to-people connections.

In a series of high-level meetings, President Murmu also engaged with New Zealand's Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters. The discussions covered a wide range of topics, including deepening cultural ties, enhancing regional security, and exploring opportunities for collaboration in green technologies and commercial space exploration. These discussions signal a renewed commitment from both nations to work closely on issues of mutual interest.

Focus on Education: A Key Pillar of the Visit

Education took centre stage during President Murmu's address at the New Zealand International Education Conference. India was honoured as the ‘Country of Honour’ this year.

The President highlighted India's rich tradition of knowledge pursuit and the transformative initiatives under the National Education Policy (NEP), which aims to develop India's higher education. She emphasized how NEP’s focus on multidisciplinary learning, critical thinking, and global competitiveness aligns well with New Zealand’s renowned education system. Universities in New Zealand are also known for their emphasis on research, innovation, and inclusivity.

President Murmu advocated for increased educational exchanges between Indian and New Zealand institutions, particularly in emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Environmental Studies. She also highlighted the importance of vocational training and skills development, which are vital for preparing students for global challenges.

This focus on education is particularly relevant for Indian students aspiring to study in New Zealand. Currently, New Zealand is home to thousands of Indian students, who benefit from its high-quality education system and vibrant multicultural environment. The President’s visit and her emphasis on educational collaboration are expected to open new avenues for Indian students aspiring to study in New Zealand.
