In a major step to strengthen educational ties with India and attract talented, enthusiastic Indian students, France has announced its plan to host 30,000 Indians by the year 2030. Indians already form the largest international group in French Business Schools, with 8,000 Indian student enrolments last recorded in the 2023–24 academic year.
The move was confirmed by French Ambassador Thierry Mathou during his recent media interactions. Calling it a ‘Uniquely Indian’ initiative, the ambassador also highlighted that this move is part of a long-term strategic partnership between the two countries and is not being extended to other nations.
To support this growing Indian student flow in France, the French Embassy in India is also streamlining visa processes. Students can expect faster visa approvals, with efforts being made to process Schengen visa applications within 48 hours of receiving complete documents.
Once students graduate, they can apply for a 24-months Post-Study Residence Permit called Recherche d’Emploi ou Création d’Entreprise, which allows them to look for jobs or start a business in France. Moreover, many French institutions have strong links with global companies, offering internships and placements. The France Alumni Network also continues to support Indian students with career guidance and networking even after graduation.
What makes this partnership even more valuable is that over 800 French companies are operating in India and employing more than 500,000 Indians. This opens up plenty of good career options waiting for students when they come back to India as well and become key contributors to India’s economy after gaining international exposure.
To make this initiative a reality, France has launched the ‘Classes Internationales’, a one-year academic foundation program across 35 French Universities. It is specially designed for only Indian students who have recently completed high school. These programs include:
Students can also choose apprenticeship models, allowing them to gain work experience while studying, with many employers covering their costs and providing stipends.
In short France is welcoming Indian students in great numbers, and if you are an Indian student aspiring to study in France, this is the right time to start planning. With exclusive programs, faster visas, and strong career prospects both abroad and back home, France is opening doors for Indians like never before.
