From August 2026, two new residence pathways will open:</p><ul><li style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Skilled Work Experience Pathway:</strong> For migrants in skilled roles (ANZSCO skill levels 1 to 3) with at least 5 years of relevant experience, including 2 years in New Zealand, earning at least 1.1 times the median wage.</li><li style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Trades and Technician Pathway:</strong> For migrants in certain trades or technical roles who hold a Level 4 or higher qualification, along with 4 years of post-qualification experience, including 18 months in New Zealand paid at or above the median wage.</li></ul><p style="text-align:justify;">These changes recognise the importance of both academic and practical skills in building New Zealand’s future workforce.</p><h2><strong>Overview of Skilled Migrant Visa&nbsp;</strong></h2><p style="text-align:justify;">The Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa allows foreign workers under 55 years of age to live, work, and <a href="https://www.studies-overseas.com/country/study-in-new-zealand"><strong>study in New Zealand</strong></a>. Applicants need a job or job offer from an accredited employer and should score at least 6 points based on their qualifications, income, or registration. Up to 3 additional points can be claimed for skilled work experience in New Zealand.</p><h2><strong>Lower Work Experience and Wage Requirements</strong></h2><p style="text-align:justify;">Currently, many migrants must complete up to 3 years of New Zealand work experience to qualify for residence. Under the new rules, this will be reduced to a maximum of 2 years, making it easier for skilled workers who came on <a href="https://www.studies-overseas.com/blogs/new-zealand-student-visa"><strong>New Zealand student visa</strong></a> and transition to residence.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">Another key update is the removal of the requirement to show a higher wage rate when applying for residence. Instead, migrants simply need to maintain the median wage throughout their qualifying work experience period.</p><h2><strong>Boost for International Students</strong></h2><p style="text-align:justify;">International students will also benefit from the upcoming changes. More points will now be awarded for New Zealand university-level qualifications, which means graduates will find it easier to move from study to residence.</p><p style="text-align:justify;">This directly supports New Zealand’s International Education Plan for Growth, encouraging more students to choose the country as their study destination.
