Overview

Founded in 1877 as the first university in Western Canada, the University of Manitoba is located in Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba. It is the region’s largest and most research-intensive university, playing a key role in advancing innovation and academic excellence. The university has two main campuses—Fort Garry and Bannatyne—along with multiple satellite campuses across the province.  It has a student population of over 30,500, with approximately 20% being international students representing 122 countries. Supporting its academic community is a faculty and academic staff of more than 8,400. The University of Manitoba acceptance rate is considered high, allowing students who meet the admission requirements a fair chance of securing a place.
 

It is home to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and is a member of the U15. The university contributes over $7.3 billion to groundbreaking research in fields such as Nanotechnology, HIV/AIDS, Functional Foods, Nutraceuticals, and Climate Change. Each year, approximately $40 million in student awards are distributed. To date, more than 98 Manitoba students have received the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. The University of Manitoba Canada offers a comprehensive study abroad program, allowing students to participate in service learning, internships, or exchange programs across 36 countries.
 

Its global reach is further strengthened by an extensive alumni network of 132,000 members in 131 countries. Notable alumni include Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan, American sociologist Erving Goffman, musician Burton Cummings, and many others, reflecting the university’s lasting impact on various fields.

Intakes

University of Manitoba Intakes are categorized as Fall, Winter, and Summer. The Fall intake is major, while Winter and Summer are considered minor. Students can select their intake based on the available courses and their study level.

Also referred to as the Fall intake, September is the primary period for admissions. It offers a wide variety of courses across all study levels.

The Winter intake, held in January, mainly offers Undergraduate programs, with some selected Postgraduate options. The Summer intake in May is limited to Undergraduate courses only.

University of Manitoba tuition fees for international students are affordable for post-secondary education, with some of the lowest tuition rates in Canada. Tuition and fees may be charged per credit hour, per term, or per year, depending on the program. University of Manitoba cost can be paid from outside Canada through two methods—Convera and PayMyTuition. Admission Requirements

University of Manitoba requirements for international students include proficiency in English, meeting the general requirements based, as well as any program-specific prerequisites. If an English language test score is needed for admission, documentation of English language proficiency must be submitted with the application.

Students Essentials Services

Student groups, associations, and clubs play a key role in helping students connect with others and foster a sense of community. Key bodies overseeing student support at the include the University of Manitoba Students' Union (UMSU), the University of Manitoba Graduate Students' Association (UMGSA), Health Science Graduate Student Association (HSGSA) and more.
 

The University of Manitoba Students' Union (UMSU) is primarily responsible for student engagement and the organization of various student societies, offering opportunities for involvement and personal development.

There is a diverse range of clubs at the University of Manitoba, including those focused on Academics, Environment, Ethnicity & Culture, and Feminism. These clubs are formed, organized, and governed by volunteer students in accordance with policies set by the university.

Each year, over 1,350 students choose the University of Manitoba accommodation. Various on-campus housing options are available, with popular choices including Arthur V. Mauro Residence, Mary Speechly Hall, Pembina Hall Residence, and University College Residence. Additionally, two affiliated colleges provide private accommodation, and meal plans at the Fort Garry Campus. After receiving the admission offer via email, the student must log in to the application portal to view the decision. If an offer has been made, the letter of offer will be available within the portal. The student should follow the steps outlined in the letter to accept the offer.

The student must claim their UMNET ID to access their U of M student email account. If needed, they can visit the website to claim their UMNET ID. It is advisable to check the email regularly.

The SCC offers support to all University of Manitoba students, including those from the International College of Manitoba (ICM) and the English Language Centre, as well as international students.

UM Learn is the University of Manitoba's online learning platform, where professors post course information, including syllabi, online quizzes, and grades. Access requires the student's UMNet ID.
