Vancouver Island University (VIU) is a public teaching and research University in Canada that has been serving students and communities since 1936. Located on the beautiful Vancouver Island, VIU offers an exceptional environment for learning and personal growth. Vancouver Island University intakes are offered in multiple months throughout the year, providing flexibility for students across various programs. Intake dates may vary depending on the type of program for international students and those applying to regional campuses. Moreover, certain graduate courses and campus-specific activities may follow different academic calendars.

Cost to Study at Vancouver Island University, Canada

The Vancouver Island University costs are set by the Board of Governors and vary based on the type and duration of the program. Depending on the course, tuition may be charged per credit, per course, per semester, or per program. In addition to tuition, student services fees are applied to all programs at a minimum monthly rate.

Scholarships Available

Vancouver Island University scholarship awards are offered to support students financially. Each year, the University selects recipients for over 700 awards, helping students focus more on learning and less on financial stress. Once students complete their profile, they are automatically considered for all eligible awards; no need to apply separately.
 

Awards are offered in various categories, including academic excellence and program-specific achievements. While some are granted during the summer, most are awarded in the fall after enrollment is confirmed. Usually, scholarships are provided as tuition credits before the fee deadline.

Admission Requirements

For Vancouver Island University admission, meeting the academic requirements is essential. International students need to provide proof of English language proficiency by submitting one of the accepted test scores listed under the University's admissions criteria. For applicants from India, the academic requirements for both Master's and Bachelor's are clearly outlined here.

Applicants need to hold a four-year or three-year bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification from a recognized university, with a minimum of 60%.

✅ IELTS: An overall score of 6.5, with no module less than 6
✅ TOEFL iBT: An overall score of 93, with no module less than 20
✅ PTE: An overall score of 65, with no module less than 60

✅ Two Letters of Recommendation (LORs) and a Letter of Intent are required. A resume is mandatory. For MBA programs, a minimum of one year of work experience is needed, while MEd programs require at least two years.

✅ Applicants need a minimum of 55% in their 12th standard. Mathematics is a compulsory subject for all programs (minimum 50% required), except for Arts-related courses.

VIU requires a non-refundable and non-transferable application fee at the time of application. This fee can be paid in person using cash, cheque, or credit card. For online applications, payment can be made via cheque or credit card. It's important to note that international students in certain Graduate and Master’s programs may have different fee structures.

While it’s ideal to apply before deadlines, many programs at VIU still accept late applications depending on seat availability. Updated deadline extensions and program contact details are usually listed on the program pages. If a preferred program is unavailable, applicants may consider applying for the Bachelor of Arts program, which allows enrolment or waitlisting in a wide range of subjects, including Arts, Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, and select Business courses.

Yes, VIU offers a variety of student employment opportunities. Students can explore current job openings through the Centre for Experiential Learning, either by visiting their office located in Building 255 or accessing the job postings online.

If a program at VIU reaches its seat capacity, qualified applicants may be placed on a waitlist. This means they will be considered for admission as seats become available. Applicants are only added to the waitlist once all required documents have been submitted. To improve their chances, students are encouraged to complete all admission steps as early as possible.

To earn a degree at VIU, students need to complete a total of 120 credits. After completing 24 credits, students are eligible to declare a major and can consult with an upper-level degree advisor. A complete list of faculty-specific advisors is available through VIU’s Academic Advising office.
