Established in 1978 under the name Northland Community College, NorthTec in Whangārei has grown into the leading institution for tertiary and vocational education in the Te Tai Tokerau region. Over the years, it underwent several name changes—first becoming Northland Polytechnic and later adopting the name NorthTec in June 2006.
The largest campus is located in Raumanga, Whangārei, with additional facilities including the Future Trades Campus on Dyer Street and a Learning Centre at Kensington Stadium. The institution also maintains regional campuses in Kerikeri, Ngāwha, and Kaitaia.
NorthTec is Northland’s only tertiary education institute (TEI), offering programmes from foundation to degree level. All courses are approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). Its Research and Ethics Committee supports educational initiatives by promoting responsible research practices and fostering learning opportunities for students, stakeholders, and communities.
Through collaborations with other educational institutions, industry partners, iwi, and charitable trusts, it delivers specialized training programs tailored to the needs of communities across Te Tai Tokerau.
NorthTec intakes are offered in two categories: Major and Minor. Students can choose their intake based on the availability of their preferred program.
The majority of Postgraduate Diplomas, Undergraduate Degrees, and Undergraduate Diplomas provide admissions during both February and July intake periods.
The April and September intake offers a limited selection of programs across all study levels.
