Overview

Founded in 1873, the University of Canterbury (UC) is New Zealand’s second-oldest University, celebrating 150 years of academic excellence. Recognized among the top 2% of Universities worldwide, UC is known for its innovation, research, and global outlook. From the beginning, the University of Canterbury New Zealand has been an inclusive institution, welcoming students from all backgrounds.

Intakes

The University of Canterbury offers multiple intakes throughout the year, providing flexibility for students. UC has two major intakes and four minor intakes. International applications can still be submitted after the due date but may not be processed in time for the intended start date. Admission is subject to seat availability. Students must hold a valid student visa for the duration of their studies at UC.

Cost to study at the University of Canterbury

University of Canterbury fees vary based on the course, subject area, and level of study. Programs that involve lab work may have slightly higher fees than lecture-based courses. Fees are also determined by the credit value of each course. International students are required to pay their estimated tuition fees in advance before commencing their studies.  

 

Upon completing enrollment, students receive a Statement of Fees outlining their final tuition costs, including the Student Services Levy (SSL), insurance, and any additional course-related expenses. UC ensures secure fee payment through platforms like Convera and Flywire for all international students.

Scholarships Available

The University of Canterbury offers a wide range of scholarships each year to support students financially. With over $20 million in scholarships and prizes awarded annually, UC recognizes academic excellence, sporting achievements, and social inclusion.  

 

Scholarships are available for Postgraduate programs, including course-specific awards. International students enrolling in their first year of an Undergraduate degree may be eligible for scholarships of up to NZ$15,000 towards tuition fees. All UC Scholarships are subject to funding availability and are reviewed annually.

Admission Requirements

University of Canterbury admissions are based on specific eligibility criteria that international students must meet. Applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken English.  


Those who need additional support to meet the required English language standards can enroll in the English language program offered by CCEL College of English.  For Indian students, the specific Postgraduate and Undergraduate requirements can be checked here.  

✅Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University with a minimum of 50%. 
✅Specific admission criteria may vary by program, so candidates are encouraged to review the respective Master’s degree course page for detailed requirements. 

Candidates must meet one of the following English proficiency standards. 
IELTS: Overall 6.5, with no band below 6.0 
TOEFL: Total score of 90, with at least 19 in each section 
PTE: Overall score of 58, with a minimum of 50 in each communicative skill 

Academic Requirements - Students from the CBSE, CISCE, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and West Bengal boards must have a minimum overall score of 75%, with at least 60% in English. 
✅Applicants from other Indian state boards need an overall score of 80%, with at least 65% in English. 

✅Applicants must meet one of the following criteria 
IELTS: Overall 6.0, with no band below 5.5 
TOEFL: Total score of 80, with at least 19 in Writing 
PTE: Overall score of 50, with a minimum of 42 in each communicative skill
