A new and significant amendment in Canada’s Student Direct Stream (SDS) has been the talking point for study abroad aspirants. In a recent announcement, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the acceptance of four new English language test scores along with the existing language test results for the country’s Student Direct Stream (SDS) applications. Among these 4 newly accepted test scores are PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT Test. These test results will be accepted from August 10, 2023.

Launched in the year 2018, Student Direct Stream (SDS) provides accelerated processing of study permits for students from specific eligible countries. As per this scheme, most study permit applications are handled and processed within 20 calendar days. This streamlined scheme is a preferred and popular choice among international students from eligible countries.
Legal residents of countries like India, Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Senegal, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Vietnam are eligible to apply for study permits with Canada’s Student Direct Stream.
With the previous acceptance of IELTS test scores as proof of language tests, SDS will now be accepting PTE & TOEFL as well.

PTE Academic is a two-hour computer-based English test. This test is widely accepted globally for study, migration, or work. With the new changes, PTE is now recognized for Canada's SDS study applications. As announced by IRCC, PTE Academic will be accepted from the 10th of August 2023 for SDS applications. The applicant must have a minimum PTE score of 60.
The TOEFL iBT test is one of the most widely used tests of English which measures reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Keeping up with the latest updates, TOEFL iBT has undergone a revised test duration and it now has a test duration of less than 2 hours. TOEFL iBT is now recognized for Canada's SDS study applications. As announced by IRCC, TOEFL iBT will be accepted from the 10th of August 2023 for SDS applications. The applicant must have a minimum score of 83.
With the approval of the PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT tests as proof of English, test takers will have a wider scope of selecting the most suitable English language proficiency. This will also help them for Canadian permanent residency or citizenship.
