A new and significant amendment in Canada’s Student Direct Stream (SDS) has been the talking point for study abroad aspirants. In a recent announcement, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the acceptance of four new English language test scores along with the existing language test results for the country’s Student Direct Stream (SDS) applications. Among these 4 newly accepted test scores are PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT Test. These test results will be accepted from August 10, 2023.

PTE & TOEFL are the leading English language proficiency tests. These tests are widely accepted by numerous institutions around the world as a demonstration of the English language ability of the test takers.

Acceptance of PTE and TOEFL has brought a wider scope for test takers to attempt different English language proficiency tests as per their language skills and abilities. Thus, if you are about to begin your test preparation for TOEFL or PTE, then this article is for you. Keep reading to find out all the essential details of the new addition of PTE & TOEFL in Canada’s SDS applications.

An Overview of Canada’s Student Direct Stream (SDS)

Launched in the year 2018, Student Direct Stream (SDS) provides accelerated processing of study permits for students from specific eligible countries. As per this scheme, most study permit applications are handled and processed within 20 calendar days. This streamlined scheme is a preferred and popular choice among international students from eligible countries.

Legal residents of countries like India, Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Senegal, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Vietnam are eligible to apply for study permits with Canada’s Student Direct Stream.

With the previous acceptance of IELTS test scores as proof of language tests, SDS will now be accepting PTE & TOEFL as well.

So, let’s dive deeper into the details pertaining to PTE & TOEFL for SDS Applications.

PTE Academic for SDS Applications

PTE Academic is a two-hour computer-based English test. This test is widely accepted globally for study, migration, or work. With the new changes, PTE is now recognized for Canada's SDS study applications. As announced by IRCC, PTE Academic will be accepted from the 10th of August 2023 for SDS applications. The applicant must have a minimum PTE score of 60.

Perks of Choosing PTE Academic for SDS

  • There are 400+ PTE centres in 118 countries.
  • Already Taken PTE Academic Score Report will be considered valid for SDS application.

  • Results come on average within 1.3 days.

TOEFL iBT for SDS Applications

The TOEFL iBT test is one of the most widely used tests of English which measures reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Keeping up with the latest updates, TOEFL iBT has undergone a revised test duration and it now has a test duration of less than 2 hours. TOEFL iBT is now recognized for Canada's SDS study applications. As announced by IRCC, TOEFL iBT will be accepted from the 10th of August 2023 for SDS applications. The applicant must have a minimum score of 83.

Perks of Choosing TOEFL iBT

  • TOEFL iBT is accepted worldwide by more than 12,000 universities and institutions in over 160 countries.

With the approval of the PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT tests as proof of English, test takers will have a wider scope of selecting the most suitable English language proficiency. This will also help them for Canadian permanent residency or citizenship.

Both the leading tests are highly accurate and help test takers achieve their dream of studying in an English-speaking country. So, if you are planning to apply for your Canadian study permits through SDS, this is the right time to get started with your test preparation.
