Denmark Removes Restrictions on the Influx of Foreign Students

Nov 14, 2023

The Danish government has recently announced changes to the international student influx for English-taught courses, making it easier to study in Denmark. After two years of capped student numbers on English-language courses, the country’s Education Minister Christina Egelund has issued a statement to welcome a higher number of international students to Denmark.

In this news, we will dig deep into this update to provide a comprehensive summary of the country’s education policy reversal. To keep higher education accessible to Danish students, the Danish government had decided to put a cap on the international student influx in 2021. This drastically reduced the number of international students enrolled in English-taught study programs. However, in a recent update, the government has decided to open more seats for international students. This U-turn of policy is initiated due to the country's experience of a massive labour shortage that is affecting the economy by billions.

At the beginning of 2023, the Danish government had allocated universities to open 1,100 English-taught study programs each year until 2029. However, with this new reform Education Minister Christina Egelund has specified that there won’t be any such cap on how many places should be opened for international students. Thus, the country will now be open to welcome all English-taught course applicants who fulfil the eligibility requirements.
