DAAD May Increase Blocked Account Amount for 2024-2025

If you’re planning to study in Germany, you’ll want to pay attention to some recent updates regarding the financial requirements for a student visa. The country has long been a popular choice for international students due to its world-class education and welcoming culture. However, the upcoming winter semester of the 2024/2025 academic year brings an important update on the tentative increase in the amount required in the German blocked account.

What's the Blocked Account All About?

For those unfamiliar with the process, a blocked account is a special type of bank account required by the German government for non-EU students. It is required for Germany student visa applications as it ensures that students have enough financial resources to cover their living expenses.

The funds in this account are locked until the student arrives in the country, and then they are released in monthly instalments to support everyday expenses like accommodation, food, and transportation. Previously, the amount required in this account was €11,208. However, as of the winter semester of 2024/2025, the amount has been increased to €11,904.

Why the tentative Increase?

Though the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has not officially confirmed this change, it aligns with the general trend of rising living costs across Germany. The goal is to prevent financial stress for students, allowing them to focus on their academic and personal growth while studying.

Germany remains a top choice for international students despite the increased financial requirements. The country is particularly popular among students from India, due to its welcoming policies and the strong job market available to graduates, especially in fields like Engineering, IT, and Business.

How Should Students Prepare?

While a €700 increase might seem challenging at first, it’s important not to be discouraged. Germany still offers numerous scholarships and exciting career opportunities that make it a worthwhile investment. Students should start planning early to meet the new blocked account requirements, ensuring they have the necessary funds in place.

Setting up a blocked account is a crucial step in the Germany Student Visa process, and it must be completed before students begin their visa application. With the right paperwork, setting up this account usually takes about a week, making it an easy task to handle ahead of time.
